Adventure is Out There!

If you've ever seen the children's movie Up, then you will recognize the phrase "Adventure is out there!"  That was our motto this past weekend.

Saturday, we took motorcycles to our favorite secluded beach that we call "Pebble Beach".  It is a 45 minute drive over dirt roads, rocks, and mountains.

With three people to a motorcycle, it can be slightly nerve wrecking and just a little uncomfortable.

You sure can't be the view though.

Angela, Becca, and I joked about wanting to find hidden pirate treasure.  Although we didn't find any treasure, we did find a really awesome cave inside a bunch of rocks.

We called it our mermaid cave.

As much as I love working in Jubilee, it is a difficult place.  It is emotionally and physically draining.  Being able to escape to a naturally beautiful and peaceful beach for a few hours is a huge blessing.

Spending quality time with new friends is also a huge blessing!

.....another post about more of our weekend adventures will be coming soon!

Phil and Angela

Phil and Angela are from Canada and they are new to our community.  It is hard to believe that I've known them for such a short amount of time because they fit in so well here.

Phil is a plumber and in about a month has already completed tons of projects.  He has lots of exciting goals and ideas for how he can use his skills to help others here in Haiti.  Every time I see Phil, he is busy helping with one thing or another and he always has a smile on his face.  Angela is a nurse.  She loves taking care of wounds and injuries that would make most people cringe and run the other direction.  Like her husband, I rarely see her without a smile on her face.  She is helping as an "on-call" nurse for the clinic in Jubilee.

It never ceases to amaze me how God can seamlessly put people into your life and turn strangers into close friends.  I've already had lots of fun adventures with them like trips to the beach, learning to slack line, and taking motorcycle rides through the countryside.

Please check out their blog  and keep them in your prayers as they adjust to life here and figure out there place in our community.

Family.

I haven't done a post to introduce you to the many members of my community here...my family.  It will come when I finally have time.  But for now, I just walk to talk about how blessed I am to have these people in my life.

We have a community of 20+ Americans and Canadians living and working here.  We don't all live under one roof, but we certainly share this life.

Sharing life means allowing yourself to open up, show the ugly parts of yourself and the beautiful ones.  It means eating together, worshiping together, crying together, laughing together, having hard discussions, playing games.  It is sharing your stash of chocolate.  It means sleepovers and movie nights.  It is motorcycle rides and trips to the beach.  It means working together for the greater good.  It means apologizing and forgiving.  It means putting others before yourself.  It means working together and spending your free time together.  It is happiness.

It hit me all over again this weekend just how blessed I am to have so many incredible men and women of God in my life, people that love me and care about me.  I can't help but smile.  How am I so lucky?

Creepy crawly...

MAGGOTS.

There are many things that I never fathom seeing or doing.  Holding a flashlight for my friends as they pull hundreds of maggots of out a newborn baby's brain is definitely one of those.  But, that is exactly what happened today.

A mother showed up to the clinic with her three month old baby.  The baby had an open head wound that was infested with maggots.  What started as a small infected spot on her head had turned into a large open wound.  The maggots had tunneled through her skull and into her brain.

We used vaseline to cover the wound and suffocate the maggots and force them to come to the surface for air.  Hundreds of maggots.  Yes, hundreds.

The baby's only real chance of survival is to go to Port-au-Prince for surgery as soon as possible.  Please keep her in your prayers.

In the meantime, every time I blink all I see is maggots.

Fear.

Fear.  It is an ugly monster, a demonic spirit.  When it rears its vile head, it renders us frozen and speechless.   Like a parasite, it seeks to creep into our relationships and suck out the life.  It robs us of our ability to trust others, and to trust God.  It threatens to consume us.  Fear brings about many other nasty spirits such as greed, pride, selfishness, hatred.  In our fear we lash out at others, curse, and spew words of hate in an attempt to make ourselves appear fearless, but all the while the driving force behind those behaviors is fear itself.  The only way we feel safe is to make others fear us in an attempt to create a barrier between ourselves and others.  And thus the cycle of hate, greed, pride, and selfishness continues.

Fear shackles us and makes us believe that we cannot and should not evolve, change, or grow.  The shackles of fear become too heavy for us to bear, and we cannot stand up for what is right.  We are bound by that fear and cannot move forward.  Moving forward into the unknown and changing requires faith.  Faith and fear cannot co-exist.  In 2 Timothy 1:7 it says, "For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control."

On a daily basis, I watch people miss out on what God has for them all because of fear.  Haiti is plagued by fear more so than I've experienced elsewhere.  Considering all that Haitians must endure, their fear is justifiable, but that does not mean is it right.  On the surface level it is fear of the dark, fear of the rain, fear of animals, fear of the ocean, and the list goes on.  But, on a deeper level that same fear affects everything that people do here.  In opportunities to stand up and fight for the oppressed, time and time again, I watch people run the other direction because of fear.  This week, I saw a glimmer of hope for this country.  A woman that works at our school refused to give in to doing something wrong despite suffering harassment and violent threats.  She stood up for what was right even though she was standing alone.  She made a hard choice that no one else would.  In a "Hollywood movie" world, everyone would realize she was right, congratulate her, and things would end happily ever after.  But this is real life.  Real life isn't like a movie.  Its ugly and messy and hard.  After she stood up for what was right, her co-workers, friends, and even her husband made fun of her and tried to convince her she was stupid.  They cursed at her.  Even as she was in tears, their own fear caused them to continue to lash out at her.

How can a country or group of people improve and advance if they cannot release themselves from the shackles of fear? It is frustrating, angering, and breaks my heart.  I want to make them open their eyes!  I want them to see that they are allowing themselves to be prisoners of fear.  I want them to experience God's love, compassion, and mercy so that they can show the same love, compassion, and mercy to others.  My hope and my prayer is that men and women will break off the chains that are binding them and choose to stand up for what is good and right.  I pray they allow perfect love to cast out fear, and live a life of freedom in Christ.
