MAGGOTS.
There are many things that I never fathom seeing or doing. Holding a flashlight for my friends as they pull hundreds of maggots of out a newborn baby's brain is definitely one of those. But, that is exactly what happened today.
A mother showed up to the clinic with her three month old baby. The baby had an open head wound that was infested with maggots. What started as a small infected spot on her head had turned into a large open wound. The maggots had tunneled through her skull and into her brain.
We used vaseline to cover the wound and suffocate the maggots and force them to come to the surface for air. Hundreds of maggots. Yes, hundreds.
The baby's only real chance of survival is to go to Port-au-Prince for surgery as soon as possible. Please keep her in your prayers.
In the meantime, every time I blink all I see is maggots.
